ACHIEVEMENTS

From the time when the organization was formed, OVERWOME has achieved several on its program-oriented projects. The following historical achievement timeline gives an overview of our wide range achievements. Thereafter, you will find more information about our previous projects. They form our first milestones on the way to our vision.

2013/14 – ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION AND HEALTH CARE PROGRAM
With great commitment to community’s life, our foundation has managed to perform the following activities:

Environmental Conservation
Firstly our foundation has organized and mobilized a community to construct local irrigation canals for combating economic problems of the Mbokomu ward region. The program was supported by the leaders of the village.

Health Care
Secondly we have mobilized 40 HIV and AIDS diseased people at Mbokomu Ward, Moshi Municipality. Our foundation tried to organize fund for education and food, but unfortunately it could not be achieved. We are still in contact with the group.

2015/2016 – ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION PROGRAM
Our first Environmental Conservation Program refers to the same name program focuses. This program consists of two projects: the Water Catchment Management Project and the Hard Waste Management Project.

1. WATER CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT PROJECT
Firstly, this project is about dealing with the problem of climate changing and its consequences. Our organization provided training for water catchment management. The project area is along the Kilimanjaro National Park reserves (KINAPA).

Project justification and background data
In the past 600 years the area was enriched with thousands of streams, evergreen all over the year, full of rain and temperatures of 12 to 22 0C. In addition the area was covered with shrubs and thickness, trees and wetland and the rivers were filled with water all over the year.

Now the situation has completely changed. The temperatures are between 30 to 390C and sometimes there are rain-less periods for about eight to nine months. There was a time when the land was cleared by extensive tree cutting for agriculture and shelter, so that a big part became bear land of no shrubs, native trees or wetland. Even some rivers dried out.

As a consequence the villagers and leaders agreed to work for a change of this climatic situation so that in March 2014 collaboration with the OVERWOME Organization was set.  As a result two groups dealing with conservation work have been formed at Tema Village. With our support we ensured the attainment of the groups and provided plastic potting bags and seeds for the water catchment program.

VIMICO
The specified reasons and OVERWOME’s basic idea form a vision of the “Water Catchment Management Project”. This project vision is creating a sustainable environment in Tema Village to get better life and environment conditions. This project mission consists of learning about handling areas like Tema Village which is characterized by high temperatures and lack of rainy periods. There shall be implementations done after learning how to manage this problem.
Objectives
Activities consist of planting and maintaining trees and plants along streams and belts in Tema Village. The planted trees shall persist by being watered regularly. In addition, new and different tree species have to be planted to expand biodiversity.

Goals
The OVERWOME has provided trainings for water catchment management. The target is to plant 20,000 native trees at 10 streams by 2030 in Tema Village.

Project implementation
The groups and the organization’s staff planted around 740 native trees along seven streams. Unfortunately, the project was struggling with many unforeseen challenges so that many trees did not survive. These problems include the climatic circumstances, lack of workforce caused by no sense of responsibility by the community and even some trees were cut for the collection of animal feed.
As a consequence, the organization learned from these problems and improved the way of working. The new methods include dealing only with giant streams depend mostly on the community. As soon as the trees will be planted, a group for the maintenance has to be formed carrying also the responsibility.

      2. HARD WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECT
The second conservation program, the Hard Waste Management Project, was also conducted at Tema village. This project was set up dealing with the global known problem: pollution due to mainly plastic but also other waste. The project focused on raising community awareness of hard wastes and its management. The training took place at Natiro Secondary school with 350 students, boys and girls equally. The training went together with practical waste collection.

Project justification and background data
Many people are unaware that they have a great impact on the environment and quality of life. While the global fights against hard wastes the response of population is limited. Only few countries especially developed countries joined the world struggle. Because of no realistic data regarding hard waste controls, the International Agency dealing with conservation of environment is obliged to answer the question about where the future generation is going to settle.
This problem is indefinable in developing countries, for example many African countries like Tanzania, and meanwhile plastic waste impacts a new appearance of the whole environment into badness and has a great influence on general health.
The project reasons include random disposal of hard wastes along water catchment areas – river and streams-, reported losses of animal life due to swallow of plastic wastes such like death of reported cow, goats and sheep after ingesting plastic particles, burning of plastic and other wastes which add carbon gases into the air surface and land fill which victimize the welfare of millions of organisms that depends on soil.

VIMICO
The specified reasons and OVERWOME’s basic idea form a vision of the “Hard Wastes Management”. The project vision is to achieve a clean, healthy and quality living environment and atmosphere for present and future humans and animals. The vision achievement consists of the mission of education improvement because environmental awareness has to be strengthened. This also means knowing and consideration of potential consequences. Therefore, trainings of hard wastes management have been provided by OVERWOME.
Objectives
Initially trainings and finally implementation are crucial for fulfilling a clean and healthy environment. The main project objective is reaching the whole Tema Village five streets named Kimamboni, Mwika, Foyeni, Maideni and Tema, including two secondary schools and two primary schools.

Goals
This project target is addressing and teaching 1,600 people living at Tema including adults, youths, children, men and women by 2018. Generally, this project is aimed to solve hard wastes random disposal into land and water sources by 80% at Tema Village and the area around. Desired results after implementation shall include removing 95% of hard wastes over the land surface and water sources, 6,000 trained villagers regarding plastic wastes control and no plastic and other hard wastes burning.

Project implementation
The organization achieved to build a consciousness about waste management, meaning the waste should be collected and placed in dustbins. The waste collected during the practical training included plastic materials, nylons, old clothes and shoes. It had been placed in a temporary dumping area, while thinking about a solution how to recycle the waste. Unluckily the waste was burned by a stranger and could not be recycled. As a consequence this project needs to be resumed and the waste recycled in the form of briquettes or plastic potting bags.

2017/2018 – ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION PROGRAM RENEWED AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM
      1. Environmental Conservation Program Renewed
The projects of water catchment and waste management are still alive. Due to the help of a volunteer 2,000 trees were developed. Additional, they have been planted by 2019 with the help of the community along a main water stream, which supplies approximately 580 people. About the hard waste management project training about briquettes made of municipal waste is given. This mostly addresses to urban people. In addition, cooperation with a radio channel was established so that a wide range of people could be educated about the issues of conservation.
      2. Entrepreneurship Program
In 2017/2018, ten individuals were trained about company formation and seven groups have been assisted in writing their constitution. They were on their ways to initiate, expand and manage their business ideas.

Conclusion of previous programs
As an organization, we have implemented some program-oriented projects and we have always improved our methods.  We are working hard to achieve our goals, even though we are facing many challenges. Our motivation is a vibrant society with well empowered people leading in dignity and responsible lives. For us to achieve this we need support from all fields of life, be it academically, socially, spiritually, physically or health wise. We humbly invite you all to come and bring a change!
